Rabbits are the fifth most popular companion animal in New Zealand, with a total of 121,000 rabbits kept as pets (Companion Animals NZ, 2020). However, there is no Code of Welfare dedicated to rabbits in New Zealand governing their care, making them extremely vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and poor living conditions (SPCA New Zealand, 2019). Rabbits are often incorrectly cared for within New Zealand and worldwide, and consistent, up-to-date information about many aspects of rabbit care is difficult to find.

In March 2019, I adopted my first pet rabbit, a mini lop I named Andy, who unfortunately passed away in February 2024. I quickly realised that nearly every piece of information I had received from the breeder and pet shops was incorrect and that it was extremely hard to find consistent information online. Bunny Tips is designed to give you information about best practices and recommendations for pet rabbits without being overwhelming. Here, you'll find basic information, as well as links to further reading, about general healthcare, diet and enclosures and enrichment for companion rabbits.
